Recently, three people were killed in a car accident near Hartsville, South Carolina. The fatal car collision occurred around 8 p.m. on North Center Road on a recent weekend night. One car crossed the center lane and hit another that was traveling north head on. The drivers were both pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in one car -- the sister of the driver -- also died. Two others were taken to a hospital to receive treatment. It is not clear what caused the southbound vehicle to cross the centerline, but police were investigating the accident late into the night.
Car crashes like this one often lead to legal claims based on negligence or a failure to use reasonable care when operating a motor vehicle. Courts look at many different factors when determining if a driver is negligent. Some of these factors include disobeying traffic signs, driving under the influence, speeding and failing to signal.
The injured party can file a claim against a negligent driver for personal injuries suffered. The court can award a variety of damages to cover medical expenses, wage loss, and pain and suffering. Damages can cover bills and medical expenses for doctors, hospital stays, and other medical services if the plaintiff can show that the expenses were acquired because of the accident. Future medical expenses can also be awarded if an injured party will need continued medical care because of the accident.
The monetary damages can help victims of car accidents and their families get past a very difficult time in their lives. While losing a loved one in a crash is not easy to recover from, families should know that they have legal options.
